In addition to climate science expert opinion and testimony in legal settings, I offer climate science and literacy consulting for journalists and media outlets, all levels of government, educators, activists, therapists, and other organizations and individuals.
With all the ‘information’ out there about the climate emergency, it can be very difficult to know where we stand, where we are going, and how to find a different path toward a livable future. New scientific reports are published, and various media outlets interpret the findings, which can understandably lead to confusion. Headlines like “IPCC report: now or never if world is to stave off climate disaster“, and “Caught between climate warnings and economic realities.….” frame the climate emergency as something to fear, and as something to balance with “reality”.
I aim to provide people with the tools needed to make sense of conflicting or confusing interpretations of the climate science and political responses to it, using empirical evidence. This is the foundation of climate literacy, and serves as the bedrock upon which policy decisions need to be made, and on which citizens need to judge the appropriateness of the ‘solutions’ offered them.
I approach climate literacy education from a holistic, deep-time perspective, drawing on stories from Earth’s climate past to help understand the present and get a glimpse of possible futures. Those possible futures are still entirely up to us- privileged people in wealthy countries- but we must act quickly. With perspective from deep-time, we can find the courage to do what is needed to avoid climate and ecological breakdown
